For the first time in American history, voters who identify as Independent now outnumber voters who identify with either major party by almost double. Per Gallup’s January 2026 release, 45% of U.S. adults identified as political independents in 2025—a record since Gallup began measuring in 1988. Republicans and Democrats sat tied at only 27% each. This is not a polling fluctuation. It is a structural shift in the American electorate, and it has been building for decades.
In 2028, that 45% will encounter the same choice they have encountered every four years: the Democrat or the Republican. Unless something different happens, the 45% will once again be told that voting for what they actually believe in is a wasted vote—and once again, the country will end up with a candidate that the majority of voters did not really want.

Dunbar’s life was split between two different worlds: One half of his time was spent with his parents, who were highly educated public school teachers and proud Democrats. The other half was spent with his grandparents, who were resilient farmers and proud Republicans. Growing up this way taught Dunbar a truth that most politicians have forgotten: We are not enemies. We are family. He saw the heart and the hard work on both sides. He learned to respect different views because he loved the people who held them.
